Is it permissible to make Supplication for the individual who does not performthe obligatory duties of Islam ?

The supplication for the individual who is a faasiq (sinner) for guidance, and that Allah ('Azza wa Jal) guides him to be upright and to rectify his affairs, this action is legislated, preferred and recommended. As far as the supplicatoin for him that may aid him sins and falsehood, this is not permissible. As for the supplication for him after death, then it is (for Allah to forgive him and have mercy) upon him, this is permissible; rather, this is legislated and preferred so that perhaps Allah ('Azza wa Jal) will answer the supplication. In the hadeeth of the Prophet ﷺ he said,

Whenever a Muslim man dies, and forty men pray over his janaazah, none of them joining anything with Allah in worship, Allah grants them intercession for him.
